This video gives great step by step details on proper cutting of screw threads. With instructions on how to shape cutting tools, and formula's to guide you on cutting a proper standardized thread, or mating to something not so standard. As always Rudy gives explicit detail in his instructions. It also includes a lot of good advise on what not to do!!!
I enjoyed the video very much. I only wished Rudy had covered internal threading, as he does so very good with his instructions. He keeps moving with his lessons and at no time did I feel he wasted any of my time (viewed it twice with several re-runs to catch everything he was teaching.)
I really liked this video lesson. I had to watch it twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. Paused it several times to make notes, there is a lot of information there. I would heartily recommend it to anyone else who is unsure about cutting their first threads with their lathe.
A bit disappointing. I have several of Rudy's books and they are nicely detailed and illustrated. Unfortunately, this video is not. Rudy actually cuts a grand total of one (yes, only one) screw. And this is a standard V-shape external thread (nothing fancy like an ACME or even an internal thread). I was a bit surprised by the rather abrupt ending after cutting only one screw. The video starts with a nice overview of the theory, but that is not at all carried over into the shop demo. In addition, this is a dubbed VHS tape so you will not have the usual DVD features like chapters and menus. (The picture quality is a bit below par too, but that is probably because of the dubbing.)
It was not one of Rudy's best videos, I'm a little bummed. The info was good, but the video quality was not good enough to see most of the work he was doing. It stopped without showing how to do any of the other threads or internal threading. I think it's worth renting as an additional info source, but not if you can do a basic threading operation already.
For my current knowledge on cutting threads it was very informative. An excellent place to start. I was going to buy this Dvd, but I think it was a much better deal to rent and take notes than to spend $50.00 with shipping . Nothing but praise for the people of SmartFlix for offering these DVDs and videos for rent. Thanks, Lonny Hall
Vintage Rudy, a fair amount of talk; not much action; but it covers exactly what you need to know to get the job done. Should be most popular among those who enjoy spending time with people of Rudy's generation, and who own classic lathes (Southbend in this case) with American toolposts, and HSS cuters, which is to say many serious home shop machinists. Of course nothing really changes in the "modern" manual lathes so you are covered there also.
I did learn how to do a better job of thread cutting after watching this video. I would have liked for it to cover threading of difficult metals better.
If you are into calculations and have to know every aspect of something before you want to try it then this is a great video. I would recommend Jose Rodriquez's "Threading on the Lathe" if you don't care about the math. It is clearer and easier to follow. That being said this is another great video by Rudy and you can learn everything about threading on the lathe from it.
